WEAVING AND COOKING IN ZAGORI
An 8-day program that combines a number of crafting techniques in traditional weaving as well as an introduction to the regional cuisine that combines Mediterranean elements and local traditions of the mountains. In one of Europe's most beautiful natural scenery, your vacation will be filled with color, tradition and materials as well as get you acquainted with the picturesque area of Zagori, its unspoiled nature and wonderful architecture.
Day 1: ARRIVAL IOANNINA. Arrival and direct transportation to Elati village in Zagori area. Check in the hotel and briefing about the program?s activities in the following days.
Day 2: After having an invigorating breakfast with local mountain tea, homemade marmalades and fresh vegetables we head to the weaving workshop for our introductory class in wool making (collecting, carding and spinning). We will get acquainted with the several techniques of processing sheep wool as well as using herbs in order to give it color. Following that we will try out our weaving technique with the traditional loom and create a woolen necklace with another technique (felt). Free time for lunch and rest. In the afternoon we will make a short hike to the village of Dilofo. Transfer back to Elati. Dinner and overnight in hotel Athena.
Day 3: After breakfast we head back to the workshop to craft with the help of the instructors a woolen creation using ?felt? technique. We pause for lunch and enjoy and afternoon greek siesta. In the afternoon Mrs. Athina, the landlady of the hotel will wait for us in the kitchen in order to prepare traditional Greek dishes with eggplant and fresh herbs. We will enjoy the dishes with a glass of local wine in the hotel?s verandah. Overnight in hotel Athina.
Day 4: Today we will learn how to make a scarf by combining different materials like silk chiffon and fine merino sheep wool. In the afternoon we will make a short hike towards the village of Kipi where we will have the opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous stone bridges of the area and the beautiful natural environment. Transfer back to the hotel for dinner.
Day 5: After breakfast, we will go to the workshop to complete our yesterday's work. Our day will be full of color and we shall experiment on pigments created by herbs that we collected in order to color our wool materials and fabrics. In the afternoon we will visit once again Mrs. Athena?s kitchen to produce homemade marmalades and preserved sweets out of seasonal fruits.
Day 6: Today our project is creating flowers with felt and producing a small colorful carpet in the traditional loom. Lunch and free afternoon to enjoy our creations.
Day 7: Transfer to Ioannina and check-in the hotel. Free afternoon.
Day 8: Departure. Transfer to the airport. End of tour.
